A complete guide for applying for Danish Green Card

Important update: Denmark’s Green Card scheme no longer exists. It was closed to new applicants on 10 June 2016 and has not been reopened. If you have read older guides, including an earlier version of this page, that describe a points-based Danish Green Card you can apply for, that information is out of date. This post explains what replaced it and how a skilled worker from the UAE can actually move to Denmark today.

What the Green Card was, and why it closed

The Danish Green Card was a points-based residence permit that let skilled people move to Denmark to look for work without a job offer first. Points came from education, language, age, and work experience. Denmark ended the scheme in 2016 because too many holders were not finding skilled work and ended up in low-wage jobs. Nothing you do now can revive a Green Card application, so be careful with any agent still advertising one. That is a strong sign the agent is working from an old playbook.

The routes that exist now

Denmark’s work permits are handled by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI). Almost all of the current routes need a concrete job offer from a Danish employer before you apply. These are the main ones for a third-country national living in the UAE:

• The Pay Limit Scheme. If you have a job offer with a salary above a set annual threshold, you can get a work and residence permit regardless of the field. The salary bar is reviewed each year, so check the current figure on SIRI’s site before counting on it.
• The Positive List. Denmark publishes two lists of occupations that are short of workers, one for people with a higher education and one for skilled trades. If your job is on the relevant list and you have an offer in it, you can apply on that basis. The lists are updated twice a year, so an occupation that qualifies today may not in the next round.
• The Fast-Track Scheme. This is for people hired by larger certified Danish employers and allows quicker processing and more flexibility once you are there. You cannot use it on your own; the employer has to be certified.
• The Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme. A version of the Pay Limit route with a lower salary threshold tied to a collective labour agreement, used in some sectors.

What this means for a UAE applicant

The honest headline is that Denmark is now an employer-led destination, not a self-application one. The realistic first step is landing a Danish job offer, usually in a shortage occupation or above the salary threshold. That is harder than the old Green Card, but it is also more stable, because you arrive with work already lined up rather than a limited window to find it. English-language roles exist, mainly in engineering, IT, health, and specialist trades, but Danish helps for most others.
